KP Carter

Children’s book creator, educator, speaker

Rushing home after school to “teach” my dolls and toys what I had learned in school and read stories to them was my normal routine. Teaching was always in my blood. Early on, daily journal writing was a way for me to process life. My maternal grandmother and my mother modeled good reading habits and made sure I took regular trips to the local library. These foundational experiences put me on the path to becoming an educator.

After receiving a degree in Elementary Education at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC, I spent a year serving students as a per diem substitute teacher in several Northern New Jersey Public School districts. One day, I could be in a kindergarten class in Newark. The very next day, I could be in a high school English class in East Orange. That opportunity gave me insight into the reading and writing challenges of children across grade levels. I knew returning to school would equip me with the necessary skills to help children. At Kutztown State University in Kutztown, PA., I studied to become a certified Reading Specialist.

Over the course of my 35-year career in education, I had the privilege to be a classroom teacher, Supervisor, Adjunct Reading Professor, and Director of Language Arts and Testing. Along the way, I raised two awesome sons. However, it was often difficult to find books with positive, relatable African American characters for my sons and students.

After retiring, I decided to get serious about my writing. As the owner of KP Carter Writes, LLC, I write and self-publish middle-grade children’s books. “Summertime with Lizzie B. Hayes” is Book One of my series. It is about a precocious eight-year-old, three generations of her colorful family, and the summer of the 1967 rebellion in Newark, NJ. Readers view the civil rights era through the lens of a child. “Lizzie B. Hayes and the Great Camp Caper” is Book Two. Loveable Lizzie is on her first trip to sleep away camp, must learn to take care of herself, and to make matters worse, she is bullied by one of her cabin mates.

My books are available in both print and eBook formats on:
